Turner Johnson named Week 9 Athlete of the Week

Though listed as a setter on the University of Winnipeg men’s volleyball roster, third-year Turner Johnson has been a bit of a swiss army knife so far this season.

“Turner has provided ball control and has been willing to play a variety of positions” says UW head coach, Richard Wiebe. “His attitude is great and he's willing to play whatever position that will help the team the most. He is versatile.”

In Week 9, Johnson and the Wesmen won 3-1 against the Universite de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges (21-25, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25) and 3-1 (25-19, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17) against the Red River College Rebels. That sits them at third in the MCAC with a 3-1 record, including 9 sets won and 5 sets lost.

But the Wesmen have been presented with a great challenge already in their 2016 campaign: a bench consisting of just one alternate player. Over the course of the season they will no doubt be forced to mix-and-match the odd lineup which is why Wiebe can’t stress enough how vital it is for a player like Johnson to play multiple positions.

“Having a short bench has made it very necessary to have a versatile player that can play anywhere. Our last few games (Johnson) set very well for us.  He has leadership skills and makes good decisions on the court.”

The Wesmen take on the 2015 MCAC Champion and current first-place Providence University College Pilots this week, Friday November 11th at 7:30 in Otterburne, Mb.
