Amy Carlson named Week 3 Athlete of the Week

After losing their home opener this season and starting the year off 1-1, CMU was in need of a spark to keep them within striking distance of first place. That spark came in the form of second-year player Amy Carlson, whose first-half volley broke the deadlock against Red River, and ended up deciding the game in a 1-0 Blazers victory.

Carlson’s effort not only helped her team earn a much-needed win, but it has also earned her this week’s Athlete of the Week. Carlson’s talent on the pitch took front-and-centre on Saturday afternoon, however it is something her coach has noticed for a while now.

“Amy is a very quick, and gifted athlete,” says Blazers head coach Tony Mazza. “She’s not afraid to get involved, and she knows the game so well that it provides us with a lot of options on the outside.”

Carlson has already shown early on that her team can rely on her to come up clutch when she is called upon. This asset will be something CMU will look to tap into, especially as their next game is a Week 1 rematch against the first-place Providence Pilots, where the Blazers will look to erase the one blemish of their early season record.

Carlson, who’s playing in her second season with the Blazers, is studying music education at Canadian Mennonite University.
