Kyle Queijo and Elyse Savoie named Week 7 Athletes of the Week

In its esteemed conference history, no Red River College team has won five straight championships.

To pull off that feat in sport at any level is astounding.

So for the Rebels men’s basketball team to make the opening day statement they did against the College Wesmen speaks volumes about how they’re poised to rewrite history books in 2012-13.

In the resounding 104-73 win on Oct. 25, at the head was point guard Kyle Queijo. Playing in his first game for the Rebels, Queijo loaded the stat line with 19 points, five rebounds, and six assists. He also showed head coach Sukh Singh what he didn’t have through most of last year’s campaign thanks to injury - a playmaking point guard.

The Rebels, 2-0 so far, are now challenged by almost a month out of conference play, as they return Nov. 16 for a weekend series against Providence University College.

Queijo, a graduate of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate is working towards a diploma in collision refining.

The College Wesmen in women’s volleyball, meanwhile, haven’t yet tasted the success the Rebels have. Spending last year hovering at .500, they eked into the 2012 Volleyball Final 4’s and got pummeled by a veteran undefeated squad from CMU.

But a new year is a new opportunity and a young, talented group of College Wesmen had a huge statement win on Oct. 26, knocking off those very same CMU Blazers in a back-and-forth five-set match.

Leading the charge at the net was first-year middle Elyse Savoie, who did it all for her team, recording ten kills on 22 attempts with four aces and six stuff blocks.

“Blocking was definitely her strength,” said Tanya Anania, head coach of the College Wesmen. “Elyse dominated at the net and was excellent on offense.”

Falling behind two sets to none, the College Wesmen had to rattle off three straight sets to get the win - CMU’s first regular season loss since Feb. 4, 2011.

Savoie, who played previously at the CIS level with Ryerson University, brought that experience to help her team fight back.

A graduate of Miles MacDonell Collegiate, she is working towards a degree in business administration.
