Denzel Green named Week 10 Athlete of the Week

Discovering a player who can turn it on in crunch time is a huge asset for any basketball team. After a comeback win in Week 10, the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen might have found their closer.

In a narrow 62-60 win over the CMU Blazers on Nov. 10, Denzel Green, a first-year guard with the College Wesmen, scored 11 of his 13 game points in the fourth quarter. In that quarter, the College Wesmen turned a ten point deficit into a two point win, outscoring the Blazers 26-14 in the final frame.

Coming off a 26 point win over the Blazers the day before, it meant a weekend sweep of CMU and a jump into second place in the men’s basketball standings.

In the Nov. 10 win, the 19-year-old Green, who graduated from Transcona Collegiate, shot 5-for-11 from the field along with a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line. Head coach Grant Richter also credits the 5’11” guard with outstanding play on the defensive end.

With the win, the College Wesmen move to 2-2 on the year, their two losses coming at the hands of first place Red River College.

Green is working toward a bachelor of arts.
