Wesmen Women Cap Dominating Season with Championship

The University of Winnipeg women’s dominance of MCAC soccer this season can best be represented with two stats: 1 goal allowed, 69 goals scored.

Entering this weekend’s soccer championships as the undefeated #1 seeds, they blew away their competition in Sunday’s final, scoring five against Providence University College in the first half before closing out the 6-0 win in the second.

Behind player of the game Serafina Trunzo and tournament and regular season MVP Sheri Hince, the Wesmen used crisp passing and outstanding ball control to keep Providence at bay. The Freemen’s All-Conference selection Annemarie Kaethler, who scored three goals the day before against Canadian Mennonite University, was held in check by the Wesmen women.

Over the last two seasons since joining soccer competition in the MCAC, the University of Winnipeg women have won every game they’ve played in, save one draw last season. This year’s final was a rematch of last year’s, which the Wesmen took 10-0. Sheri Hince was last season’s MVP as well.

One other notable moment from Sunday in women’s soccer were the Red River Rebels, who entered the tournament winless. After getting pounded 9-0 by the Wesmen on Saturday, the Rebels bounced back to a 3-1 win over CMU in the bronze medal game - earning their first win of the season and the first for their women’s soccer program. The Rebels were keyed by goals from Domonique Colatruglio and Amy Reimer, both of whom were All-Conference selections.
