Nick Miller Named Week 15 Athlete of the Week

It’s often been said in sports: it’s not how you start, but how you finish.

But when a player scores 20 points in the first half of a game voted by the fans to be Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) Game of the Month, and the bar has been set high enough to get that player’s team the win, that saying can get flipped on its head.

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU)’s men’s basketball forward Nick Miller did just that against the league’s former top team, the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen. The 20 points gave CMU their eighth straight win, an 80-71 nail-biter, at home on January 28.

“Nick was key in us getting the win,” said head coach Darcy Coss. “His defensive pressure and scoring in the first half gave us confidence for the rest of the game.”

Miller, a 6’2” fifth-year player who spent his last two years playing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level with the University of Manitoba Bisons, has rejoined the school he started with and had an immediate impact.

Now leading the conference at 8-3 with just two weeks left in the regular season, CMU looks poised to enter the MCAC Basketball Final 4’s on March 2nd and 3rd with the all-important top seed, as they attempt to win their first title since 2008.

Miller graduated high school at Westgate Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was recently featured on 92.9 KICK-FM’s VarCity Sports.
