CMU's Alex Leaver Named Athlete of the Week

Leaver adds a pair of his 18 points against the Rebels

A 5”10’ guard with the Canadian Mennonite University men’s basketball team, Alex Leaver racked up 18 second half points in his team’s 85-73 victory over the defending MCAC champions from Red River College on November 14.

Leaver, who is in his fourth year with CMU, has become the team’s sixth-man as the Blazers added talented guards Enoch Nazaire, Kevin Quirante, and Spencer Harrison to their lineup this season. However, head coach Darcy Coss couldn’t keep him out of the game come the second half.  “He played awesome. He played hard. He just brought it today,” said Coss. “(Following the altercation) he hit four jumpers in a row. He’s the one that pushed us over the top there.”

Coss spoke of Leaver’s clash with Red River guard Jason Malcolm late in the third quarter that earned him a technical foul. After a very brief cool down on the CMU bench, Leaver returned to the game on fire – draining jumper after long jumper on his way to 13 fourth quarter points.

“The net gets pretty big once you get a couple in a row,” said Leaver. “I made a bad play and let the team down, so I couldn’t come out and just slack… I had to get it back."

Leaver, who is also serving his first season as head coach for CMU’s women’s basketball team, will lead both of his Blazer squads into Providence College in Otterburne, Manitoba for the tip-off of the 2009 Prairie Challenge Cup on Thursday, November 26. The tournament will move to Red River College for the remainder of the four-day exhibition.
