Blazer Men Show Progress in Alberta Tournament

The CMU men’s volleyball team displayed significant improvement over their 2008 result this Thanksgiving weekend at the Red Deer College Men’s Volleyball Tournament. Unable to record a victory in Alberta during last years trip, Mark Kliewer’s 2009 Blazers bettered their record this year by two wins, beating Olds College and The Kings College, ending the tournament 2-4.

Peter Dueck and Tim Dueck led the way for the Blazers during the weekend, combining for 64 kills. The Swift Current brothers also played defensively steady, with Peter recording 6 digs, and Tim 5. Outside hitter Todd Reimer was second only to Peter Dueck on the weekend, hitting for 39 kills and 7 service aces.

Though the two wins established major improvement for the 2009 edition of the Blazer men, the team did face their obstacles. CMU fell in 3 sets to the hosts from Red Deer, and dropped four set matches to Lakeland College (Lloydminster, AB) and MCAC rival Red River College. The Blazers will now take some time off before a pair of matches with the Assiniboine Community College Cougars on October 31, when both the CMU men and women host their first MCAC home weekend of the season.
