’08 MVP Maddever Strikes Twice, Injures Ankle in Opener

The Freemen offensive was too much for CMU

Ruth Maddever’s two-goal first half helped lead the way for the Providence Freemen in capturing the first victory of the 2009 MCAC women’s soccer season on Wednesday afternoon. They doubled up on the CMU Blazers by a score of 4-2.

The Blazers did hold most of the offensive chances in the first half however. Even by gaining four corner-kicks in the opening twenty minutes of the contest, they failed to capitalize on their chances. It was the 2008 conference MVP, Maddever, who opened the scoring on a counter-attack in the twelfth minute that thrust the Freemen into an early lead. Maddever would capture her second goal only five minutes later on a run down the right flank, rifling the ball past the Blazers’ goalkeeper Ashley Reimer.

CMU countered late in the half when first-year striker Elisa LeDesky scored a wonder-goal, dribbling through the Freemen defense before blasting the ball into the corner of the goal. The Freemen didn’t let up leading the match 2-1 as Dana Van Dijk scored a third goal for Providence, restoring their two-goal lead.

Tragedy struck for Providence late in the first half when Maddever was injured during a collision with a CMU defender. The ankle injury forced her out of the match, and she did not return.

The teams went on to trade second half goals; Mikaela Villalobos scored for CMU, while Melanie Warkentine replied for Providence. It was indeed Maddever’s pair of first half strikes that proved to be the difference in the game. The entire Freemen squad will surely miss the outstanding striker’s presence on the pitch as she recovers from her injury.

“We did well today”, said CMU head coach William Wiens. “There are many good signs, the score notwithstanding.”

The two teams will meet again for a much anticipated rematch on Wednesday, September 23 at Providence College in Otterburne, MB.
