Rebel Men Capture Back-to- Back Basketball Titles

men_bball_champs

The #2 seeded Rebels upset the top-ranked Blazers without regular season MVP Josh Olaes

It was a heartbreaking end to a highly successful MCAC season for the #1 ranked CMU men’s basketball team on Saturday night. The Blazers witnessed Red River take the men’s semifinal convincingly on Friday night over the #3 ranked Providence College Freemen, advancing them to Saturday’s championship final - a rematch of last years title game. The resulting basketball rivalry between the Blazers and the Rebels has been dubbed the ‘Crosstown Showdown.’

Without the services of 2010 Regular Season Most Valuable Player Josh Olaes due to family commitments, the Rebels entered Saturday’s final against their rivals as decided underdogs.

Blazer Women Take Back Basketball Championship

The Blazers took the conference title back from the defending champs from Red River

More than 300 spectators packed the Loewen Athletic Centre at Canadian Mennonite University on Saturday, March 6 to witness CMU defeat Red River College 70-26 to win the 2010 MCAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

Despite the lopsided final score, the two teams were very evenly matched through the first half of play. In fact, the #2 ranked Rebels held the lead during the opening quarter, getting point production from teammates of the conference’s leading scorer Brittany Adrian. Adrian was held scoreless by the Blazers in the opening quarter and had her only field goal in the game in the second quarter, ending the game with a mere 4 points.

RRC's Dylan Power named Athlete of the Week

Power was named the men's Final 4 MVP

If their was a name more fitting for an outside hitter in volleyball, the MCAC would like to know about it.

Dylan Power is a first year left-side for Red River College’s men’s volleyball team. The 5’11” Glenlawn Collegiate grad was named the MCAC men’s volleyball Final 4 MVP for his play over the championship weekend at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba.

The Rebel men completed a second consecutive perfect season in 2010, capturing a third conference title in a row, albeit with only two returning players for 2009-2010. This has shown how effective Rebels head coach Dan Gilbert has been in bringing in new talent every year.

A top recruit of Gilbert, Power was a huge player for the ‘Bison 18U’ team that placed second in nationals in 2009, and that Gilbert coached.

“We did have two key (players return) this year,” said Gilbert. “I knew we would rely heavily on Erik (Hansen) and Jeff (Draper) for on court leadership as well as what they can bring offensively. But we did have some good players come in for us like Dylan Power, Jacoby Dueck, and Jesse Folkerts, who came in and really helped to stabilize our team.”

Both Folkerts and Dueck were selected to the MCAC all-conference team.

Gilbert and the Rebels are looking forward to repeating as conference champions in 2010-2011, and Power will be one of the returning stars to the powerhouse Red River lineup.

Our Student Athletes Excel in the Classroom

Student Athletes competing in collegiate sports in the newly formed Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) have achieved an extremely high level of academic performance during the conference’s first athletic season of 2008/2009.

Across the conference’s six academic institutions, 60 per cent of student athletes achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2008-2009 academic year. These individuals have been given the distinction of “Scholar Athletes,” a standard that has been established by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association.

In comparison to roughly 20 per cent of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) student athletes who achieved a grade point average of at least 3.0, the MCAC has displayed unparalleled academic achievement for athletes in Canadian post-secondary institutions. These efforts clearly make Manitoba colleges highly sought after destinations for student athletes who wish to attain a high level of scholastic achievement and learning, all while competing in an elite level of college athletics.
