Sarah Townsend named Week 16 Athlete of the Week

Canadian Mennonite University Forward Sarah Townsend had a weekend that exemplified her own team’s play last week.

It was a pivotal point in the Canadian Mennonite University women’s basketball season as they played a home-and-away series against the defending 2015-16 MCAC champion Red River College Rebels (5-4), who currently sit second in MCAC standings behind CMU. The 5’’9” Townsend and her Blazers entered the series with a perfect 9-0 record on the season, and the not-so-distant memory of the Rebels hoisting the MCAC championship trophy after beating them in last year’s final.

In the first game of the series on Friday night, Townsend shot a forgettable 2-for-14 from the field including 1-for-8 from behind the 3 point stripe and the Blazers were handed their first loss of the season falling 66-55 to the Rebels on RRC’s home court.

A loss to a team who has been the biggest obstacle for the Blazers in recent history, the Blazers’ game the following night looked to hold many implications not just for CMU’s regular season record but for a possible matchup in the he team’s psyche heading into the final chapter of the season.

On Saturday at home in CMU’s Loewen Centre, the Blazers wrote a considerably different story. Thanks in large part to an explosive 21 point 2nd quarter performance, CMU beat the Rebels 71-52 to improve their record to 10-1. Townsend had a monster game, shooting 64% from the field (including 6-for-11 from 3-point land) and leading all scorers with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. It’s rare to see a stat line that robust in MCAC women’s basketball, not to mention a whopping 18 points from behind three.

Townsend’s ability to bounce back just one day after a disappointing loss mirrored her team’s, and shows how much Townsend means to a Blazers squad who have been nothing short of dominant this season. She leads the conference in productivity and has a 3-point shooting average of 40%, an overall field goal average of 41%, and has scored more points this season than anyone else within the conference.

A product of Linden Christian School in Winnipeg, Townsend is in her 2nd season of eligibility with the Blazers.

CMU will face University of Winnipeg College on February 1st to round out their regular season campaign, and will look to overcome last season’s disappointing loss in the Championship final when the MCAC Final Fours take place on February 11th and 12th at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre.
