Jonathan Wilner named Week 16 Athlete of the Week

A 5’9” point guard for the 8-1 Red River College Rebels, Jonathan Wilner is second in scoring in the conference this season averaging 20.7 points per game and shooting a 62% clip from the field.

Wilner scored 18 points for the Rebels while adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 30:32 minutes played against Canadian Mennonite University last week. Combined with his previous two conference outings, Wilner is averaging a monster 32 points per game on 69% shooting in the Rebels' last three games.

“He is one of the MCAC’s best finishers around the hoop and when he gets hot, there are no shots outside of his range” says RRC Head coach, Scott Kirkpatrick. “He also averages 4.2 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists per game, 2 steals per game, and he has an overall efficiency rating of 19.5 this season”.

The Rebels had been perfect up until last week’s loss against Canadian Mennonite University, perhaps a slight call to action for the Rebels as they near the end of their regular season. But because of their dominance throughout the rest of 2016-17, the Rebels have already clinched the first-place seed going into the MCAC Final Fours on February 11th.

Wilner is in his second season of MCAC eligibility, studying Sports Management at Red River College. He played his high school ball out of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg.

“Jon is an elite competitor and a great team player who is willing to do whatever is needed for the team to be successful on the court”, adds Kirkpatrick.

The Rebels will cap off their season with a game at home against the Providence University College Pilots tomorrow, and a home-and-away series with University of Winnipeg College on February 4th and 5th.
