Wesmen cruise to 3rd Finals appearance in 3 years

University of Winnipeg College defeats Canadian Mennonite University 3-0 (25-19, 25-18,  26-24)

The Wesmen didn’t get off to the start they'd hoped for, letting CMU hang around in the first set before pulling away and ending it abruptly 25-19. CMU rallied very well and parsed together what offense they could while the UW for their comfortable with their game. By the third set, CMU’s Player of the Game and MCAC All-Conference selection Kim Town had already put the Blazers on her back. They made one last push, eventually falling in extras.

“We didn’t pull out the win that we wanted this game but we played well and we played as a unit. It’s nice that stayed consistent, we knew this would be a tough game going in. We were definitely the underdogs”, says Towns.

In the end, the attacks of UW’s Talia Paetsch and Jocelyn Bartor were too much for the Blazers. But Paetsch says it was more-so their own side of the net the Wesmen were worried about in order to be successful.

“We expected CMU to come out strong because it’s a semi-final. We mostly wanted to focus on our serving and passing though, and we did”.

On what will be a rematch of last season’s women’s final, Paetsch doesn’t forget how she and the Wesmen beat Providence University College for last year's title.

“Last year we actually were down after the first set and we ended up coming back and fighting hard for that. So we’re prepared to do the same thing. We’re gonna' try really hard to start strong but we’re prepared to fight and come together as a team as well”. UW's speedy setter Kelsey Lacroix, who methodically provided for a well-rounded attack all game, was awarded her team's Player of the Game award. The Wesmen will play the host Providence University Pilots in tomorrow's Final at 1:00.
