Esther Schwartzkopf named Week 3 Athlete of the Week

In their Week 3 win against Providence University College on September 22nd, the CMU women's soccer program beat PUC for the first time since the 2009 Women's Championship Final. Esther Schwarzkopf made sure it was a memorable one.

After starting the season with a disappointing loss, the Blazers bounced back on September 13th with a 3-0 win against the ACC Cougars. Schwartzkopf scored her first goal of the season.

Then on September 20th, Schwartzkopf scored twice in a losing cause as the Red River Rebels beat CMU in a close 3-2 game.

The following Tuesday, just three days after CMU's record had fallen below .500, Schwartzkopf and the CMU Blazers routed the Providence University Pilots with a score of 5-1 in the aforementioned win that had the Week 3 Athlete of the Week collecting her first hat-trick of the season.

Oh and one more thing - Schwartzkopf is a rookie, and she's tied for the most goals in the league*.

"Esther has done more than score goals for us, she has been a ninety minute player who is key in our attack but also helps defensively" says CMU's head coach, Lianna Bestvater. "She is really playing with confidence for us and if she can stay on form she will definitely help us in these big matches that are coming up in October".

A native of Winkler, MB, she is in her first season with Canadian Mennonite University after winning the 2014 MHSAA Rural Provincials with Northland Parkway Collegiate and being named the high school Rural Provincial MVP.

    * Schwarzkopf and Red River College's Jessica Lister are leading MCAC Women's Soccer with 6 goals apiece.
