Beth McKay named Week 20 Athlete of the Week

With only two weeks left to play in the regular season, it was very important for the Canadian Mennonite University women’s basketball team to begin clicking at the right time going in to playoffs. This started with getting back to .500, and after their win against Providence in Week 20, they accomplished that – with more than a little help from forward Beth McKay.

McKay was exceptional on both ends of the floor, finishing with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 34 minutes of play. That kind of all-round threat is something the Blazers will be counting on come playoff time, but also something that head coach Joe Di Curzio doesn’t take for granted.

“Beth is a great team leader,” says Di Curzio. “Her defense is always outstanding, she’s a terrific rebounder, and lately her outside shot has been terrific too.”

CMU has already locked up the second seed in the MCAC and will face Providence for a birth in the finals in three weeks. Technically, their two games left on the schedule might not mean a whole lot, but the Blazers will look to continue to find their groove going into the playoffs, and the play of Beth McKay will continue to be a huge factor if their team wants to be successful in March.

McKay is a first-year player, and in her third year studying Kinesiology at CMU.
