Ben Shantz named Week 13 Athlete of the Week

Sharing a league with a seemingly perennial champion in Red River, and a very deep squad in the College Wesmen can prove to be very difficult. But with the first half all wrapped up, the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers find themselves in second place going into the break, and are only getting better.

One the big reasons for the Blazers success this season has been the addition of Ben Shantz, who has been lights out as CMU’s sixth man this season, averaging 16 points per game in Week 13, and providing a ton of energy off the bench.

The key to Shantz’s game is versatility, as he has shown the ability to jump in on so many different levels, contributing in and out of the paint on both ends of the court. As a first-year player, Shantz has been fantastic, and head coach Billy Isaac has certainly taken notice.

“Ben had a great inside/outside weekend for us, scoring from in the post and on the perimeter” says Isaac regarding Shantz’s role in CMU’s crucial 88-76 win against Providence. “He’s been a very hard-nosed player for us, and his great energy off the bench has been huge both offensively and defensively.”

The Blazers will be looking for Shantz’s play to continue into the second half, as CMU gears up for what will most definitely be an exciting finish to the MCAC season.

Shantz is from London Ontario, and is in his first year of study in Business and International Development at CMU.
