Wilma Oombash named Week 12 Athlete of the Week

The 2013-2014 season hasn’t necessarily been easy for the Red River College women’s volleyball team. The women’s division is as competitive as ever, and last year’s runners-up already find themselves in a tight race just to make the playoffs this February. With a lot of bodies coming in and out of the lineup in training camp, it was unclear how the team would fair this year – with this uncertainty coming to a boiling point when the Rebels found themselves without a setter to start the season.

That’s where Wilma Oombash comes in. Going into this year, Oombash was pegged by head coach Chris MacLennan as the “best all-round athlete on the team”, but as an outside hitter, setting was something she had no experience in. However, from seeing her work ethic and natural ability in practice, MacLennan called on Oombash to convert to a setter – and they certainly glad they did.

In a grueling five-set thriller against CMU, Oombash recorded 42 assists, to go along with four kills and 16 digs, leading her team to victory against the team they will likely be fighting for a playoff spot with by the end of the season. Week 12 was somewhat of a coming out party for her newfound abilities as a setter, and coach MacLennan couldn’t be happier with the work she’s put in to get there.

“She works so hard each and every practice, does not miss any training opportunities, and is always looking to get some extra touches on the ball,” says MacLennan. “She’s really starting to get comfortable with the offense, and we’re definitely seeing her hit her stride as a setter.”

With such tight competition in women’s volleyball, the Rebel’s will be counting on Oombash’s work ethic and natural ability to continue to help lead them to success. That starts back up again on Friday, as they will face the undefeated Providence Pilots, and look to deliver the first blemish on Providence’s currently perfect record.

Oombash is in her first year at Red River College, studying to be an Aboriginal Language Specialist.
