Harouna Gueye named Week 4/5 Athlete of the Week

It takes more than just a thriving offense in order to knock off an undefeated team like the Pilots. This past weekend, Université de Saint-Boniface was well aware of this, and luckily for them, midfielder Harouna Gueye was more than ready for the challenge.

He may not have scored in bunches, but Gueye was certainly dominant in Saint-Boniface’s 3-1 upset victory against Providence on Saturday, shutting down their key players, and proving to be a top two-way player in this league. Head coach Justin Légaré believes Gueye’s ability to excel on both ends of the pitch can be attributed to his knowledge of the game.

“I have seen many skilled players before, but what sets him apart is his game knowledge - he understand the game really well,” says Légaré. “The combination of his skill and game knowledge is what helps him dominate on the field.”

Along with his shutdown ability during the upset, the first-year player also made time to contribute on the score sheet, converting on Saint-Boniface’s third goal, and setting up the first. With the win, USB moves within striking distance of second place, and generate a huge amount of momentum leading into the final weeks of the season.

Gueye, born in Senegal, is in his first year of studying business at Université de Saint-Boniface.

Because there were only two conference games in Week 4, the two weeks have been combined to provide a larger selection pool.
