Red River women ride home crowd to a championship date

It took a while for the Red River Rebels women’s volleyball team to get going in their semifinals match. When they did, though, their home crowd was right behind them.

With a nail-biting five-set win over the #2-seeded University of Winnipeg College Wesmen, the #3-seeded Rebels provided the only upset of the day, on their way to their eighth win in nine matches.

With a 2-1 set lead, the Rebels got knocked back on their heels in the fourth. College Wesmen left side Chloe Pommer, solid throughout, knocked down three straight kills late in the set to put it out of reach, as Winnipeg would win 25-19.

In the deciding fifth, though, a raucous crowd backed up All-Conference left side Tyra Tetrault, as she provided an overwhelming service game. With Tetrault behind the line, the Rebels rattled off an incredible eight straight points, going on to win 15-9 and take a long, grueling match.

In the earlier semifinal, #1-seeded Providence University College used an impressive front line to take care of business against a scrappy #4-seeded CMU Blazers team.

Though the Blazers threatened in all three sets, it was MVP Lauren Toews, along with power hitters Heidi Martens and Chelsea Needham, who set the tone with their play at the net. Providence would take the match in straight sets.

This sets up a 2 p.m. women’s championship final between #1-seeded Providence and #3-seeded Red River College. Providence won the season series, 3-1, but the Rebels won the last match-up between the two in five sets on Feb. 9.

The 2013 Volleyball Final 4’s take place at Red River College’s Notre Dame Campus. $5 gets you in for both women’s and men’s championship matches on Feb. 23.
