Maxine Delaney named Week 17 Athlete of the Week

It’s been a down year for the Canadian Mennonite University women’s volleyball team, but they earned a win to rally around in Week 17.

After an undefeated regular season in the 2011-12 season, many fifth-years moved on and a younger Blazers team are now fourth in the conference. That didn’t stop them, though, from knocking off the #2-seeded College Wesmen in a five-set marathon on Feb. 6.

It was returning left side Maxine Delaney who played the biggest role in her team’s win, their fifth of the season. With 13 kills, five service aces, and two blocks, she was able to pace her team to the win, despite being down a set headed into the fourth.

With the win, CMU also removed any doubt they would fall out of the playoffs, with a late-season scare by a surging Les Rouges team putting things in doubt for the perennial powerhouses.

Winners of two of the their last three, the Blazers will play at 2 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the first women’s semifinal, taking on #1 Providence (who have lost two of their last three). Last year, Providence upset CMU in the final to take the Volleyball Final 4’s championship.

Delaney, 5’10”, is playing in her third year with the Blazers. Team captain at Oak Park High School, the 23-year-old is now studying social sciences.
