Tyra Tetrault named Week 14 Athlete of the Week

At a time when many are taking the time to relax, the Red River Rebels women’s volleyball team spent the holiday season hard at work.

That’s the mindset for head coach Lea Romanchuk, and it appears to have paid off. After spending winter break in practice and on the road playing in Alberta, the Rebels have started the second half of the season with three consecutive wins - all in straight sets.

The competition is nothing to scoff at, either. With one win against fourth-seed CMU and two against top-seed University of Winnipeg College, Red River College is firing on all cylinders after working through the holidays.

To compare, in November the College Wesmen beat the Rebels in back-to-back games, one coming in straight sets, the other in five.

Filling up the stat sheet and leading her team was left side Tyra Tetrault who put down 15 kills and pulled out 24 digs in six sets against the College Wesmen. She followed that up with a 12 kills-14 digs-two aces performance against CMU, all in just three sets.

Moving up the standings, the Rebels are now over .500 for the first time in 2012-13. Tetrault, a second-year player, will lead her team into their next big test - a back-to-back against defending champion Providence University College on Feb. 8 and 9.

Tetrault is studying welding and is a graduate of Transcona Collegiate Institute.
