Providence retaliates against Rebels for Women’s Soccer Championship

With an undefeated regular season where they outscored opponents 18-2 behind them, it might have been expected that a Championship would be an easy feat for the talented Lady Freemen.

On Championship Sunday, though, a feisty Red River Rebels team had other ideas.

What resulted was Providence’s biggest test of the season, which they passed with flying colours, winning 2-1 to take the 2012 Women’s Championship.

The Lady Freemen got their goals from tournament MVP Kate Osadchuk and Athlete of the Week selection Brianna Plett. The Rebels got their first goal of the year from forward Celine Duval.

The game started as expected, with the Lady Freemen roaring out of the gate. In just the seventh minute, Osadchuk made a driving move in the centre of the box and kicked a hard ball past the keeper to put her team up 1-0.

Thanks to a renewed defensive effort by the Rebels and a few outstanding saves from keeper Margo Gerrard though, they were able to keep the game moving back and forth for the rest of the first half.

In the second half, that effort paid off, as Duval scored off a scramble in front of the net, tying the game and putting the pressure back on Providence. Duval’s goal was just the third the Lady Freemen have allowed this season.

With both teams energetic trying to earn a lead, the deciding goal dramatically waited for the 77th minute, when speedy forward Brianna Plett also found herself with a foot on a ball at the goal line, taking advantage after a slip-up in possession by Gerrard. That goal made it 2-1, and would end up being the winner.

For Providence, it is their first women’s soccer title since 2009, having lost the last two seasons in the final to teams from University of Winnipeg.
