CMU and Providence To Play For Women's Volleyball Title

After a regular season filled with upsets and unpredictability, the women’s semifinals Friday was expected to be a long, competitive affair. The top seeds, #1-ranked Canadian Mennonite University and #2-ranked Providence University College would have none of that, though, as they raised their games to the playoff stage and knocked off their opponents in straight sets.

After beating the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen and Red River College, respectively, they will play for the Women’s Championship at 6 p.m. on Saturday night.

The first women’s semifinal saw two teams who had met just one week ago, the #4-ranked University of Winnipeg College Wesmen and the #1-ranked and undefeated CMU Blazers. That last match saw a full five sets, with CMU eventually finishing things off after a few scares.

The semifinals match was a different story though, as the Blazers looked primed and in playoff form. Scoring the first six points of the match on their way to a dominant 20-9 first set, they never looked back, taking it in three (25-9, 25-20, 25-17). With the win, they push their unbeaten streak to 21 and move to the Women’s Championship at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Their last loss came in last year’s final, a five-set loss to Providence University College.

Those same Providence Lady Freemen came into the 2012 tournament as the host team and the #2 seed. Their semifinals match came against the Red River Rebels.

Thanks to a solid back row attack, and an outstanding effort on the right side from Player of the Game Lauren Toews (above), the Lady Freemen put their history of tight matches with the Rebels in the past, knocking them out in three well-played sets (25-10, 25-12, 25-17).

The Red River Rebels and University of Winnipeg College Wesmen will play in the women’s bronze match at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
