Mario Giesbrecht Named Week 1 Athlete of the Week

Providence University College opened the first weekend of the men’s soccer action with a statement, and no player on their roster looked more impressive than 6’1” forward Mario Giesbrecht. Giesbrecht, a 20-year-old in his third year out of Niverville Collegiate, played pivotal roles in both Providence road games. On Saturday, September 10, in front of 400 fans at Winnipeg Soccer Complex, Giesbrecht spoiled the Canadian Mennonite University men’s home opener with a penalty kick goal in the last minute of play to push the Freemen to an exciting 1-0 win.

“Mario had injuries that cut his season short last year but has come into this season very fit and determined to make an impact,” said Providence men’s coach Martin Ward. “His effort this past weekend was an inspiration to the team and I'm very happy to have him back at his best.”

On Sunday, Providence rained on the debut parade of the Red River College men’s debut, winning a convincing 4-0 game. Giesbrecht shined bright in this win as well, scoring three of his team’s four goals.

The Freemen men will take their 2-0 record home for a rematch of last year’s MCAC soccer final against the University of Winnipeg college Wesmen on Thursday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. Highlights of the game can be seen next weekend on MCACathletics.ca.
