Maraleigh Short Named Week 1 Athlete of the Week

Although their was only one league game in women’s soccer, it certainly wasn’t a quiet week as Canadian Mennonite University and their team captain Maraleigh Short had a memorable Saturday afternoon.

With a 2-1 victory over the 2010 MCAC finalist Providence University College Freemen where Short scored both goals for her team, CMU recorded their first win in women’s soccer since 2009. It was also the first win for team coach Anika Southam, who joined CMU in 2010. The team went 0-4 in league play last year. “Maraleigh is an exciting player to watch,” said Southam. “She saw the ball beautifully and received a couple of fantastic through balls last Saturday. I am very happy with her performance thus far and look forward to coaching her the rest of the season.”

Short outpaced Freemen defenders for her first goal in the 16th minute, and followed it up with a brace goal ten minutes later. Providence would score one to come within striking distance, but CMU held on in front of 400 fans at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Short is in her fourth year out of Rivers Collegiate Institute and is studying Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies.
