    Freemen Women Knock-Off Powerhouse Blazers

    3-2 (19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 21-19)

On Friday, February 4, the Providence College women’s volleyball team defeated a CMU Blazers squad that had not lost a match in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference in two years. Friday’s win came close on the heels of a heavy defeat at the hands of the Blazers two days earlier, as CMU defeated Providence 3-0 Wednesday night (25-16, 25-20, 25-11). CMU looked to be in line for another straight set victory as they came out to a 2-0 set lead, when the home team began to play more consistently, gaining confidence as the match went on, and finally winning a five set classic. The Freemen stepped their game up in the clutch, saving five match-points before taking the final frame 21-19.
The Freemen were led by third-year middle Victoria Ryshytylo, a product of Lord Selkirk Regional High School, as she had 21 kills, 8 blocks, and 3 digs, while freshman power Chelsea Needham contributed with 11 kills and 4 digs. Freshman middle Madi Stott also had a strong performance with 11 kills, 9 blocks, and 3 service aces.

Head Coach Scott Masterson was high-spirited following his team’s upset performance.

“We’ve felt that all year we haven’t played to our potential and our only goal for this match was to get to the end and feel like we had put out our best effort,” said Masterson.

“We figured that if we did that, we would at least give ourselves a chance to be competitive with a very strong and talented CMU team. The fact that we came out with the win is obviously very rewarding and will hopefully give us the confidence to finish out the year playing our best volleyball.”

Providence will face another challenge this weekend as they play a home-and-home series with the #2 ranked Red River Rebels. Friday night will see Providence visit the Rebels at 6:30 p.m., followed by the last regular season home match for the Providence women’s volleyball team on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

The 2011 edition of the MCAC Final 4 Volleyball Championships will take place at Red River College’s Notre Dame Campus on the March 4 and 5.
