Ruth Shantz Named Week 2 Female Athlete of the Week

The 2008 MCAC MVP has returned from injury

It was a rematch of the 2009 MCAC Women’s Soccer Championship Final on Sunday, September 26, but this time there were two significant differences. The first, Providence College defeated Canadian Mennonite University 2-1. The second, 2008 conference MVP Ruth Shantz (formerly Maddever) was in the lineup for the Freemen, and it made a huge difference for her squad.

Shantz scored twice Sunday; her first conference soccer match since the 2009 season opener when she scored twice in the first half before suffering a season ending ankle injury early in the second.

The MCAC saw the athletically inclined Shantz (Maddever, at the time) suit up for the Providence basketball team in early 2010. She used basketball as a way to get back into shape following her broken ankle’s rehabilitation through the fall and winter.

“It was more external motivation to work on the movement of my ankle,” said Shantz. “Basketball is a great sport for that.”

It appears as if the rehab has restored Shantz to her former self.

Born in Plymouth, England, the Neepawa Collegiate graduate is in her fourth season with the Freemen, and completing her final year of study in Youth Ministry at Providence College.

Between practices and matches, Shantz commutes from her residence on campus in Otterburne to mentor students in grades 9-12 at Soul Sanctuary in Winnipeg. This is all part of the required internship in Providence’s Youth Ministry program.

“It’s a lot of driving, but it is definitely worth it.”

She hopes to become the youth pastor at Soul Sanctuary following graduation, but may take more formal training in counseling beforehand.
