CMU's Anneke Hildebrand Named Athlete of the Week

The athletic guard had a season-best 17 rebounds against the Rebels

The Canadian Mennonite University women’s basketball team has been a perennial favourite to grab the MCAC title since the conference’s inception. Every year the Blazers seem to find themselves with another injection of fresh talent on the court. Anneke Hildebrand is at the head of this year’s freshman class.

The 19-year-old guard who hails from La Barriere, MB, was instrumental in CMU’s romp of Red River College on Friday, January 29. In the 83-46 win, the Westgate Mennonite Collegiate product put up 17 points and 17 rebounds, including 12 off the offensive glass.

“She just crashed the boards from the outside every time,” said head coach Alex Leaver. “She just went and got the ball, which is exactly what I told her to do.”

17 boards is an astounding feat for a 5’6” guard who is known more for her agility and finesse than raw power in the paint.

“She’s got a good vertical,” added Leaver. “A very athletic player.”

The lopsided victory over second-placed Red River puts the Blazers in command of the conference standings at 4-1. Their lone defeat, a 65-62 home court barn-burner, came at the hands of that same Rebels squad back in November.

“The last time we played Red River they beat us in the last quarter with a three-pointer,” said Hildebrand. “So we were really coming into this game strong hoping to get what we wanted. We still had to work really hard.”

They indeed got what they wanted - but they will have to continue their winning ways in order withstand a run from the never-say-die type team that is the Rebels. Last year’s championship saw Red River upset the favoured Blazers in a scrappy and hard-fought game.

The excitement was evident in Hildebrand’s voice when she spoke of the final regular season matchup between the rivals on Saturday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Red River College.

“It will be really intense, because now that they’ve seen us step up our game they’ll do the same.”

The game will be broadcast for Shaw television with five cameras and live play-by-play and colour commentary, and will stream live at http://www.rrc.mb.ca/mcacbasketball .
