Rebels Women's Basketball Team Plays in USA

The Red River College Women’s Basketball team traveled south to Bottineau, North Dakota this past weekend to take on the Minot State University-Bottineau Ladyjacks and the Bismarck State College Mystics.

The annual pre-season tournament, named the ‘Kevin Thom Classic’ after the late student athlete who passed tragically this previous spring in a car accident, has marked the start of the lady Rebels season as of recent and always proves to be a challenging trip for the team.

Friday night the Rebels took on the Minot State Ladyjacks, falling by a score of 87-59. Despite great second and third quarters, when the Rebels were able to narrow the gap to 8 points, the tremendous shooting of Ladyjacks guard Bethany Haberstroh and the rebounding and finishing talents of forward Adrienne Davis were too much this early in the season for the young Rebels squad. Despite the 28-point loss, the Rebels gained valuable experience playing against talented and competitive athletes. Rebels second year post, Shaylyn Stutsky was tremendous on the boards leading all rebounders with 16, while it was third year forward Julia Anning leading the Rebels in scoring with 18 points.

Saturday afternoon proved to be an even tougher challenge as the Rebels took on the Bismarck State Mystics. With only six athletes in the lineup, fatigue seemed to take its toll as the Rebels fell by a score of 83-57. However, the Rebels did make significant steps in establishing themselves as a competitive group of athletes. Once again Shaylyn Stutsky was a force in the paint as she collected 17 rebounds to go along with her 15 points and 3 blocked shots. First year player Brittany Adrian provided much of RRC’s scoring on Saturday, collecting 20 points and 7 rebounds on the afternoon. With ball control from first year guard Danica Reimer, and solid play from first year forward Ashley Hoitink, the lady Rebels look forward to matchups with their MCAC opponents in the coming weeks as pre-season basketball action continues.
