Dramatic Comeback in Men's Hockey Opener

Sunday night proved to be an exciting kickoff to the 2008-09 MCAC men’s hockey season as the CMU Blazers and the ACC Cougars fought to a dramatic 4-4 draw in Oak Bluff, Manitoba.

The Assiniboine Community College Cougars seemed to be caught a little bit off guard as the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers jumped out to a commanding 4-goal lead in the first period on Sunday night. Blazers goals came from Mike Friesen and Ben Newfeld, and Geoff Reimer added two more tallies in their initial dominance of the Cougars.

The second period was a different story though as ACC halted the Blazers offensive attack and responded with their first goal from Adam Kerkowich.

By the third period it was a completely different game. The other half of ACC’s Kerkowich-brother tandem, Ian, scored to make it a 4-2 hockey game. The Cougar comeback continued with another marker from Matt Botchman before Evan Taylor found the net for the game-tying goal.

The Cougars will try to build on their momentum when the MCAC men’s hockey season continues on Friday, October 31. The Providence College Freemen will visit ACC for a Halloween night tilt at 8:10 p.m at the Brandon Sportsplex.
