Bill Wedlake takes on top role with MCAC athletic conference

(WINNIPEG FREE PRESS) BILL Wedlake has been appointed executive director of the newly named Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC), formerly the Central Plains Athletic Conference.

The MCAC includes eight universities and colleges, including Assiniboine Community College, Booth College, Canadian Mennonite University, College Universitaire de St. Boniface, Providence College, Red River College and Steinbach Bible College in Manitoba, and Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji, Minn.

"It's exciting. I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Wedlake, who retired last spring from his position as athletic director of the University of Winnipeg. In a statement, he said his goal is to increase the public visibility of MCAC.

"The MCAC has tremendous potential... (to) become a conference that attracts Manitoba athletes who might otherwise head to Alberta or B.C. to play at the college level. We need to keep more of our athletes home in Manitoba."

Wedlake previously coached basketball at the high school and university level for 32 years.

He formerly served as president of Basketball Manitoba, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada.
